closed eye

Recommended Posts

One of my new chooks has a closed eye.

I got her on Friday and all was OK till today, although I did notice she seemed to close her eyes more than I was used to.

Now one eye is closed and one open She seems healthy and is eating. There's no sign of infection/discharge.

They're vaccinated so I'm thinking (hoping?) it's nothing too nasty

Any ideas?

I had this with my chicken when I first had her. it was when she first started free ranging. she too had no other symptoms, I even took her to the vet who was mystified. After a few weeks she was fine again. When I researched it on the Internet I found a suggestion that it was a reaction to being outside in brighter sunlight and once she'd got used to it she was ok. Funnily enough, this winter when there was bright sun and very white snow she started to do it again and I read that the chooks don't always like very bright sunshine.

Don't know if this is your chooks problem but hope it gets resolved soon :)

Thanks for the suggestion :)

I don't think it's sunshine as they're in quite a shady bit of the garden - whereas their first home was all open.

It didn't seem to be bothering her (well - not as much as me catching her so I could have a close look! ), but it's clearly not 'right'

Hi,

My Orpington has one closed eye as well. Theres no pus and its not inflamed just closed. Only noticed it today and she seems her usual self, even laying an egg! But I had this problem with one of my other orps a year ago. She too had a closed eye and then it went all inflamed and horrible. I took her to the vets but they didnt know what was wrong with her. She managed to cope fine with just having one eye (eating and drinking) but she did start to go downhill and eventually died :( But I dont want the same happening to her. My other chooks are fine (touch wood) and she is at the moment. Im thinking it could be some kind of genetic thing (or maybe that breed?) I dont know, would be grateful for any suggestions!
