Possble Mycoplasma - advice appreciated.

Recommended Posts

Well little Holly the white silkie has been quieter than usual for around a week but has had a really heavy moult and is just growing new feather shafts so I put it down to that, eating, drinking, dust bathing, had full crop in evening and empty in morning. They were wormed with Flubernet a couple of weeks ago.

Then yesterday she was really quiet, just sat in one place and if she went near the others they had a go at her and I then noticed she was a bit wobbly on her feet so made a vets appointment for this morning (needed to see chicken vet).

This morning she was even more wobbly, didn't get up, eat or drink. Vet thinks she has mycoplasma but she has no signs of sneezing etc, chest is clear, temperature normal but I can't find any reference on searches of chickens being wobbly, vet says it is neurological due to the mycoplasma possibly brought on by heavy moult.

She has had a baytril injection and I have liquid to give her twice a day.

Anyone had any experience of this, likely outcome, advice etc, I don't want her to suffer but equally want to give her a chance. She is in my office at the moment in a dog case not looking happy at all and not eaten or drunk this morning.

Thank you.

One of mine had joint problems caused by mycoplasma which made her wobbly (but wasn't neurological as far as I know). I brought her inside and she had to have 3 tylan 2000 injections and metacam. I also gave her nutridrops and hand fed her. She recovered fully in about a week (although as you know they always carry out and can come down with it when they are stressed).

Fingers crossed that your girl makes a good recovery. I would certainly bring her into the warm and isolate her from the others if you haven't already. They sometimes need a second course of antibiotics if there hasn't been a full response to the first.

Is your vet a chicken specialist? If not I would try to locate one.

Thank you, I am really glad that your girl recovered, so maybe there is hope for Holly. I would definitely describe her as wobbly so that fits. Yes, she is indoors in a crate in my office, still not eaten anything but then it would have been stressful for her at the vets so hopefully she will improve and eat something when the antibiotics kick in. I've got nutri drops so I will give her some as well.

You can order critical care formula to feed her with if she's not eating and also tempt her with treats like egg. It''s important to make sure she is drinking and to syringe drink her if necessary.

Fingers crossed for her. There is lots of information about mycoplasma on this site and the web.
