Just wanted to post about how excited I am now the ground's being worked on :D

We are definitely going to go for the Hidcote 21x6 WIR (with 1/2 inch weldmesh) from Cotswold Wood Company. They've been very helpful and said they will attach my coop to the WIR when they come to build everything on site which I was worried about! Just so glad it's all coming together...my family and I are hopefully going to visit the showroom to order and make a day of it in the local area.

The ground itself is horrible in terms of being full of large roots, concrete blocks and plants, but my family are getting through it. We're going to be putting 4-5inches of wooden sleepers/posts into the ground, flush against the ground to stop tunnelling and then black plastic square foundation pieces (not sure what they're called!) for the WIR to sit on, and these plastic squares will sit flat and straight. We'll also be doing a mud-free management method which I have done before - we followed the Newland Poultry instructions on their website:

http://www.newlandgrange.com/CHICKEN-RUN-MUD-MANAGEMENT(1720020).htm - this will be put right through the WIR and through in between the black squares and the wood in the ground, so the chickens won't get into a corner and dig it up (like the do now! Lesson learnt...) It will also mean the area is essentially 'sealed' if a mouse somehow does get through from under the wood/mesh. We'll finish with weldmesh strips around the edges of the black squares which will stop digging and also keep the mud-free mesh/turf protector sealed to the ground.

And loads of bags of woodchip arrived this morning!! :D

Sooo looking forward to letting the girls take themselves to bed and up in the morning as they'll be safe enough for me to not lock them up everyday! AND this also means...MORE CHICKENS   Whooop~!

x

Edit - spelling!

Thank you, good_egg!

My current girls get on OK, when they FR together they mingle enough for me not to worry. Atlanta and Lady eye each other up, but Atlanta always wins, so I can't imagine that changing (but who knows!) They haven't been out together for a while, but their coops are right next to each other, so I will introduce them seperately, just to make sure.

Ideally I wanted to travel to get some millefleur pekins from an omlet member, but it's so far away (about 5 hours round trip) that plan seems to look unlikely now because of the journey. BUT we were thinking about going with the original place we got my girls (Newland Poultry) and we thought about buying 3 Lavender Orpingtons when the lady has them ready in the summer, but these hens will be put in our existing Eglu (partitioned off in the WIR for intros) and I can't see the Eglu Go being big enough for such big girls - but I may be wrong! I was also looking at the new Partridge Star hybrid and mum likes the Blue Maran! We'll see...we might end up falling in love with a different breed when we go chook shopping

I've got my eyes peeled on your news, I have everything crossed you get the permission and your neighbours are happy :)
