counturchickens
Tom and Barbara have been getting it on! I wasn't planning particularly on breeding, but seeing as we have a pair I might see what happens. She hasn't laid any eggs yet, but if she does should I just leave them and see if she sits? Any advice welcome!
miller30
Some ducks make terrible mothers but some are ok you could just leave them and see what happens it took one of my khakis 6 years to go broody and then she had two sets of eggs and sat for 7 weeks for nothing its easier if you give the duck eggs to a broody chicken to hatch leanne
Chortle Chook
I was wondering about this too. If any ducklings hatch (I'd put the eggs under one of my silkies) would the surrogate mother and ducklings need to be separated from everyone else? miller30
Yes they would as the other birds would try and kill them leanne
counturchickens
I've ordered an incubator! I'm not planning on putting the eggs in until June, as we're going away for a few days so I will wait until we're back so I can do the turning! Clunie
Good luck with the incubator and ducklings. They are just so cute and different from Chickens! Also a lot messier too!
counturchickens
I'm a bit nervous about the process, but it would be lovely to have a few more ducks!
lozaqauckers
Hi just wanted to offer my advice my appleyard minature has had 10 ducklings sadly we lost one in the nest it was pushed out . She laid 11 eggs in the nest and didn't sit on them until she was happy with the amount She laid , then did a fantastic job for 28 days and we saw her making the nest wet to humidifie the eggs , she is still doing a fantastic job and they are 2 weeks old now she has become very protective over them . We did seperate the drake once they had hatched . I think you should try and let the mother duck do it, I tried 5 duck eggs in a incubator and all 5 died in the shell . . Hope this helps keep us informed. Lorraine Jemima Donald
