Cockeral's spurs

Recommended Posts

I was just wondering!

I have a phone call today from my grandparents who keep one of my cockerals with their hens as I'm only allowed to have one at home, saying that they thought that one of the hens had blood coming out of its back end... Anyway I go down there to find that it is actually the cockeral and one of his spurs has come completely off leaving blood all over the place but making it look worse than it looks.

I was just wondering will his spur grow back? And also has this ever happened to anyone before, he is a mature bird and I am wondering whether it has been caught on something or when he was mounting one of the hens...

Thanks :)

Hi CAG. Yes they will grow back perfectly fine

The spur base always bleeds very badly -imagine the base as a cone shape and the spur as the cover, the 'cover' will have pulled away and left the cone exposed. It will stop bleeding within a day or so, a coat of vaseline or soap over it will stop the bleeding sooner though

Chances are he just caught it when treading a female, its actually very easy to break a spur, I have done it many times - usually as I get them out of a box at a show!

Thanks! He is very well in himself and is still treading the females as some of them had blood where he had treading them  ! It is also clean and will hopefully heal!

Thanks :)
