new layer having softie issues

Recommended Posts

Hi

I'm a bit lost and was hoping you guys might have some advice. Fuchsia will have been with us three weeks on Wednesday and started laying last week. We had a 49g egg Wednesday, a 44g egg Thursday, then a softie on Friday. Saturday was a massive 68g double yolk affair, before a 49g yesterday.

I came home from work tonight to find not one but two softies in the poo tray :( so far all solid eggs have been in the nest box, and softies in the poo tray. Can they lay two eggs in one day? I thought it took 25 hours, but she laid two in nine...

I'm fairly sure she is the only one laying yet - Galax has a slightly red comb, but not as bright as Fuchsia, and Dandelion is nowhere near. They're on farmgate layers pellets and I've put a bowl of oystershell grit in the run for them too.

Is this normal when they first start laying? We are going to a chicken keeping course on Saturday so I guess I can ask everything and buy anything we need whilst we are there, but I just want to know if I'm missing something obvious. I don't want her to be poorly :?

Don't worry. If they are just coming into lay then they can get a bit confused. Softies and double yolkers are ok and should settle down. Softies seem to take them a bit by surprise as any I have had have been in the poo tray too. They can lay two in one day - I came home the other day to two blue eggs and Connie is the only blue egg layer - she has been laying a while as well. I assume they are on layers pellets and have access to oyster shell? If not you might want to do so.

We've had two more good eggs the last couple of days, and someone just laid a softie on the lawn...

I was putting the kids to bed and found all three of them trying to eat the yolk off the grass. :( I removed the remains of the shell that Fuchsia was keeping in her beak, and have poured about a litre of water over where the rest of the yolk was to try to dilute it so they wouldn't eat any more.

What should I do? I'm a bit stuck and don't know how to stop them doing this :?

One of my new girls laid some very strange softies

I was going to post on here, but after a couple of weeks she stopped and all seems OK now - as in she's laying normal eggs.

If nothing else is wrong, and they have enough calcium, I'd think it's just 'one of those things' as they start laying
