I'm so shocked and sad. Got home and went straight out to see the girls and give them some meal worms just picked up from the garden centre and Silvia my beautiful blue copper maran was dead in the run. She was a picture of health this morning and layed, had a full crop of food. She was only a year old. I have no idea why she died. I have been nursing my ex batt Margo through an implant and she is doing ok so to now loose Silvia is such a shock. Anyone have any idea why a healthy one year old hen would just die?

What shock, poor you It sounds sudden...heart attack maybe?? I had 2 die suddenly in the night a couple of months back. Separate coops and that was a shock too. I was cursing poor Milly as she had just been broody and only a day out of the anti-broody coop!! She to had been fine and still had food in her crop.

How awful! What a horrible shock. Clearly, it was so sudden, you couldn't have seen it coming. Like mimi said, something like a heart attack? Chickens are so good at carrying on 'as normal'. In a situation like this, it would probably be impossible to have noticed if anything was brewing.

Thanks for the replies. We decided she must have dropped dead while digging as she was in a freshly dug hole with earth on her feet. She did love digging bless her.

 

She will be missed as she was a beautiful hen with a lovely kind character.
