new chick question

Recommended Posts

Egg started yesterday and this morning i lifted chicken and a little chick plopped out. Must of been in her wing?. Was

only an inch fall - scared me to death but all ok. Anyways - i shut eglu this morning before i went to work and its

open since 2pm but hen not been out to poo and she didnt yesterday - cant be sure about day before. I am scared

to lift her off incase i hurt the chick.

1. Will she go out if she needs to ?

2. At what point will chick surface to eat/drink? And will mum help her out of nest area ?

Thanks so much.... :D

best to keep her locked in until the last chick is 24 hours old I put a feeder of chick crumb plus a drinker of water in when I put my broodies on lock down at day 18. broodies are best left to get on with it once the chicks start to hatch which is easy said than done.

chicks are fairly hardy as far as been dropped a few inches are concerned as they all soft fluff plus they can take a kicking of mom from time to time when she's in I must find my babies food frenzy. and they get stood on

one of mine jump of my hand this evening from a couple of feet up little things only 5 days old but is as light as anything just pick it's self up and carried on as if nothing had happened

they wont eat for 24-48 hours and mom will have to show them by them she'll have given up on the nest area plus any un-hatched eggs at that point you can open the coop door and put the food and water in the run she'll also change the way she acts and sounds as she will want to get the chicks out of the house she'll also be either a lot calmer or neurotic

Thanks, I have been reading a few of your old posts prior to this tonight.

Ok - 4 eggs, 1 hatched. All look good as candled them Fri night but this was not done correctly and they are not

all at the same stage. Currently in an eglu ( bit concerned about chick getting out of the nesting area to feed).

I have another silkie who has gone broody in main chicken house - would i be able to bring her into eglu and take

all unhatched eggs out from under current mum and place under other silkie. Would that work? Would current

mum allow other silkie to sit on her eggs? Would they both be able to share in same eglu?

Any thoughts really appreciate!

No that wont work and its better if mum has more than one chick you don't really want a single chick as long as you have food and water in with them just leave her to it if you start mucking around with her shes not gonna be very happy I would get your other silkie some eggs or snap her out of it leanne :)
