chickensaregreat
I have had the same plastic feeder for a number of years now and it is slowly but surely giving way in various places! I was just wondering what peoples thoughts/experiences were with treadle feeders? My birds waste quite a lot of their food through spilling it and I also have issues with squirrels and other vermin despite having things down. Are these feeders really worth it as some seem quite expensive? I can see that the concept behind them could work in the way I need it but didn't realise they were so expensive! Thanks!! Egluntyne
I have this one/url] and have no problems with it. it is in the WIR - it would be too big for an ordinary Eglu run.
Lavenders_Blue
I have a Grandpa's Feeder. Expensive, but in my opinion worth every penny. I had trouble with rats getting to the food and munching on spilled food overnight. The GF has solvec this problem. It's also handy to be able to chuck a load of food in at the beginning of the week and leave the hens to it. Especially useful when we go on holiday or when Flubenvetting. WitchHazel
I have Grandpas Feeders, and they are fantastic, well worth the money. I previously had the cheaper more upright treadle feeders on my allotment, as they seemed a much better deal than the expensive Grandpas Feeder. However, wefound these problematic. The edges were sharp (I found this out the hard way, as did one of our hens), they let in water and we ended up with lots of stale soggy food inside, which was difficult to get to to clean. We then found our cockerel couldn't get his head in. In the end I gave in and bought a Grandpa's Feeder... and as soon as I set it up, I ordered another to replace the other treadle feeder. If you see them side by side, you'll see why the Grandpas's cost more. When we had a rat problem at home I replaced the Omlet grubs with Grandpas Feeders. I'm not in any way affiliated with Grandpas Feeders, I'm just a satisfied customer.
