sarah corkish-brown
Help, I live in the Highland of Scotland (120 miles to the nearest town) and rely on our girls food being delivered, they have just rang and told me the delivery is not coming now until Thursday, it was supposed to be here last Thursday, and I have now run out of Layers Pellets and Grain, what on earth can I feed them now for 2 days!!!!! Jenthelibrarian
Poor you! This topic came up with my hen-keeping friends in the USA, who get cut off by blizzards. Some of the suggestions that were made included: Oatmeal, canned or frozen or cooked fresh veggies, or cooked pulses such as lentils, wild bird food, unsweetened breakfast cereals like rice crispies, either dry or with a little milk/water/yoghurt, dried fruit, trimmings or s"Ooops, word censored!"s from any fresh fruit or veg you are eating [mine like apples cores and the seeds!], toasted bread [not in huge amounts though] and any plain biscuits or crackers if not too salty or sweet. I know there is a long list of foods hens like somewhere on this forum! Americans also seem to favour feeding hens with canned tuna or cat food for protein, or mixing dried foods with meat stock. Personally I preferred the suggestion of egg, which should be hard-boiled and chopped, or scrambled, and mixed with other food so as not to encourage egg-eating in the coop. I'm sure other people will come up with ideas, here's hoping your delivery arrives asap *hugs.
Olly
Porridge! (made with water, not milk) - or any of the things on Jen's list above. It won't hurt them for a couple of days.

merlina
Mine get all sorts of things that 'need using up' (but aren't in any way 'off') Yesterday they had some frozen risotto cooked up (it had been in the freezer too long and had a bit of freezer burn - they didn't seem to mind). And they surprisingly enjoyed king prawns in chilli sauce! (also very freezer burned) They love tomatoes have have gone a bit squishy and dandelion leaves are their favourite veg, apart from sweetcorn which is possibly the best food ever, apparently One of their favourite treats is scrambled egg (scrambled until it is very solid and un-egg like). Wild bird seed is apparently very yummy They love wholemeal and granary bread, but happily turn their beaks up at white bread which the neighbour scatters everywhere for wild birds
