PoachedPlease
So my hen has hatched 2 cute yellow fluffy chicks, just 2 days old and totally cute. However the mamma keeps acting mad when we go in and see her. She squawks and scratches at the floor and stands on the chicks, they get frightened and she nearly squashes them. She seems to calm down when we leave, so is it us? Is this normal? Se is in a dog crate in the shed so for most of the time she is on her own. Maybe she has gone stir crazy? Has anyone else seen this? Ver worried for her and chicks health! Thanks Xx
Redwing
Some broodies just do that, they can be really protective and in their stress the chicks do tend to get under their feet as they try to protect them Some will ease up a bit as time goes on and some will stay like that for the whole 6 weeks of motherhood Cleaning them out is always fun though Seriously - take your lead from the broody, as long as she doesnt harm her chicks you may just need to accept that she doesnt want you to touch them. If you DO need to check over the chicks or take pics etc them sneak them out from under her after dark and return them asap
