poorly girl* Update better news

Recommended Posts

One of my rescue girls is very under the weather. She's probably about 2 and a half. She was fine at the weekend, running around with the others eating etc but for the last couple of days she has slowed right down, isn't really eating or drinking, or foraging, or doing anything much chickeny. just wants to sit all the time and is keeping well away from the others. I cant see anything wrong with her legs or feet, have checked her tail and undercarriage, can't feel any stuck eggs. She is skin and bones bless her. Her tail is up but there is a tinge of purple in her comb. I took her to the vets a couple of months ago and the vet thought she might have had the start of a tumour, but as it was going to be a lovely weekend I elected to bring her home so that she could sun herself and she really perked up after that, and started laying so I thought perhaps that the vet was wrong. I was hoping this was going to be a similar "blip" but last night she didn't even try to put herself to bed and elected to sit in the dust bath so I had to lift her in myself. Only thing which might be a red herring is that the flap that covers her bottom, looks a bit red and sore around the base of the feathers and I did wonder about mites? I can't see any on her, but the nesting box of the cube was a bit yucky (we've been away for a couple of weeks) , and I am going to dismantle and spray with poultry shield at the weekend. Could mites make her so unwell? I've given her some nutridrops (although I've never had any success with those!) and left her with the others for now. They don't seem to be picking on her. Any ideas welcome...I don't fancy a trip to the vets really, if her time is up, I'd rather she lived it out naturally if possible.

UPDATE...

She is much better today. I have posted on the best remedies thread, but I read on Backyard Chickens that bread (very small amounts) soaked in Olive Oil and Red Wine is good for motility of the crop....She didn't have sour crop or even an impacted crop...she had a completely empty crop because she had stopped eating, but I thought I 'd give it a try in any case...and it was a HUGE hit...and today she has been eating much better, scratching about instead of sleeping, and is generally much improved.

ALSO...I did find a horrid infestation of the dreaded Red Mite in the the Cube, which probably accounts for why she wouldn't go to bed...stripped everything, poultry sheilded it, diatomed and REd Mite Barrier Powdered it..will Poultry Sheild again in four days and then weekly...Damn Damn and Double Damn!!!
