Is this normal before roosting?

Recommended Posts

Evening guys

Can anyone tell me if this is normal behaviour just before the girls go off to bed? Usually about ten minutes or so before the girls put themselves in the cube for the night they all get together and start pacing, they walk up and down the front of the enclosure all together in a line like policeman all beefed up and kind of excited then they one by one start to go off to bed. Is this normal, and also usually every morning the girls start getting excited as soon as I open the gate, ready to pop out of the cube, this morning none came out for about 5 minutes so I opened the nest box only to find one in there, she shouted and was not happy i disturbed her then popped out of the cube and began clucking, I thought it was an egg announce but when I looked....no egg... Was she just shouting because I disturbed her? Please tell me she isn't going to start that every morning otherwise my neighbours are gonna go crazy especially as its hot and all the windows are open... :shameonu:(cube green)

My girls aren't laying yet but I have hensat for my mum a few times and when I accidentally disturbed one who was laying she stopped and went strutting around shouting at me. I think she was just cross I'd disturbed her. She took a while to calm down. She was probably just telling you she was annoyed that you disturbed her. Hopefully she won't be like that every time she lays. Other people will know more but in my limited experience it sounds like she was just in a bit of a grump at not getting to lay an egg in peace.

I've definitely seen the marching up and down before bed thing. It seems that they have to re-negotiate the pecking order every night in terms of who gets the best roosts. When I've disturbed them or tried to hurry them up they have ended up going to bed in the 'wrong' order, which causes a disturbance and they all have to come out and start again.
