Lulabellx1
Meet (from left to right) Daisybelle - a black Sussex, Adrian and Red - both Rhode Islane Red's. Our three new POL hens! After a couple of nasty fox attacks last year, we have rebuilt the hens coop entirely and have extended it as well. Therefore... we have room for a few extra hens. The old girls were a bit emotional about having to share their coop, so we let them all free-range for the day in order to give them a bit more space. They seemed much better by the evening and have all snuggled down together. I'm sure we'll still have a few fisty cuffs, but they'll settle down. Looking forward to some yummy eggs, anyone else out there got some Rhode Islands? I have read they are good layers and very friendly So, we have gone from four... to seven hens now! good_egg
They are fab - how exciting! Love Daisybelle's floppy comb! Adrian and Red look nothing like my prev RIR, but I suspect she was a bit of a something else as well.
Lulabellx1
I think ours are a cross as well hun, maybe with a Sussex? Well, settling in has been fun! The old girls haven't been very accommodating however, we have let them all free range for the time being, to give them some space to get to know each other. I have been very impressed with Daisybelle, the Black Sussex as she has laid us an egg today. However she also escaped! We have since caught them all and clipped their flight wings as she hopped onto the compost bin and then up onto the six foot fence... gave the neighbours a giggle! My partner works nights and he had just woken up to the sound of "Oh! There's a chicken out there" from the neighbours kids. I'm hoping, with time and space they will get to know each other soon enough and establish their pecking order. Forgot how long it can take. Have definitely noticed that the battery hens are the worst! Little blighters. Well...happy chicken keeping everyone!
sjp
they look like Rhode rock hybrids or Black rocks which I think are RIR crossed with a barred rock the other is a silver Sussex based hybrid which goes by many different names
Lulabellx1
Yes, in America they call the Silver Sussex (or Black Sussex) a Daisybelle. My two year old daughter is named Daisy so she wanted to name her Daisybelle The breeder had the other two listed as Black Rocks
redsunset
Yes they are Rhode Rocks as I have 7 of them and they are good layers. 3 of this years POL Rhode Rocks though have gone broody on me, and I have one nice one and two crabbit ones! That's a Scottish word for 'well moody'!!
Lulabellx1
LOL - glad they are good layers. I used to have three Light Sussex hens who seemed to go broody a lot. However, for the last year we have had 3 ex-bat's and one Light Sussex and none have them have gone broody on me yet. Now we have added three more POL hens, I'm sure it'll only be a matter of time They're all very handsome and Daisybelle's floppy comb does make me laugh. I wonder if it'll stay like that, or straighten up? Lu x
