Angie
I went camping on Friday came home Sunday to find my Blackrock/Silkie cross has moulted, almost no feathers left at all . She is very quiet and doesn't look well. On Friday she was perfectly fine. I have checked her over and she has no nasty things on her, or on any of the others, who have a few feathers lost due to the hot weather we had.(and are growing back nicely) It is her 2nd moult and it really has hit her hard, I'm worried I might lose her . She is normally top chook and struts about. It is awful to see her like this , it is usually Sassy who suffers when in moult. I have put some tuna in a dish for her and she has pecked at it but with little enthusiasm . Are others moulting early this year, I know my SIL has one that has lost her finery last week too. Eggasperated
I just posted on the chickens page as mine are starting a moult, which seems early to me. Nothing as dramatic as your girl though, hopefully someone will offer some more advice as to what to do to help her through it - I will be adding Lifeguard to my girls water as soon as I can get some. Angie
I lost my Blackrock/Silkie. I spoke to the Vet, he just thinks with the recent heat then a dramatic moult she wasn't strong enough to deal with it. As all droppings were normal , no other ill health symptoms, she was a good weight too , She was over 3 yrs and wasn't laying as often this year . Time ran out for her. He offered to PM her but didn't think he'd find anything sinister. A sad day.
Eggasperated
I'm so sorry about your girl, it all seemed to happen so quickly. It does sound as if she had a long and happy life with you, I don't think you could have done any more for her.
AlisonH
One of mine has started moulting big time, she is 2 and has never really moulted much before. Also, between the 2 of them they are laying virtually no eggs and they were good layers before about 3 weeks ago. They have been sitting down a lot and I have been worried about them but they seem perfectly fine, eating and drinking and are happy free ranging in the garden. All very odd - I'm sure they do it when we are going away deliberately to worry us!
