Thinking of getting quail - anything to consider?

Recommended Posts

I have 8 hens and I'm considering getting some quail. If I get a rabbit hutch with run would that be suitable for 6-8 quail? What are they like on lawn? I wouldn't consider having my hens on lawn (apart from fr time) as they would tear it up, what about quail? Would woodchip be more suitable? Looked in dobbies garden centre and they charged £14 each, I was expecting to pay half the price, are there any suppliers in Warwickshire or west midlands or Leicestershire?

Anything else I should consider before making the leap?

If you rotate them around the lawn you may be ok but I'd put them in a permanent site on wood chip - means theres less chance of them escaping when you move them and you won't have patches all over the lawn.

Obviously the quail can't free range as they'd just fly off so make sure its secure - they're more attractive to rats too so make sure you use strong weldmesh.

The local childrens farm local to me charges about £8 and a breeder in Warwick I know charges £9.50 - let me know if you'd like eithers details :)

Last year they were £6 and £8 but I think as they're becoming more popular the demand has gone up and so have prices!
