Janet G
We have a hen with fly strike, & wondered what chance of recovery. She seemed OK yesterday though she & 1 other have had a respiratory tract infection so have been dosing with Baytril. I think I would have noticed the necrotic smell & didn't though it was obvious today. Vet cleaned out the area, near her vent, but other than offering to put her down was pretty unhelpful. We are to clean the area with salt water & keep her on the Baytril, nothing more suggested. So, what else to do about the maggots - would Invermectin kill any emerging maggots? What to do about the necrotic flesh to aid healing - gentian violet or is there anything else that might help? Thanks for any help, I'm desperate not to lose this favourite hen, a 6+ year old rhode island red. Janet
Olly
There's a sticky here about it.
Chucky Mama
Keep saline bathing and it should heal. My concern would be that fly strike often occurs in animals that are generally debilitated for some reason. If she was an otherwise healthy hen she should heal but there could be something else going.
The Dogmother
Saline bathing, and a 'dressing' of Stockholm Tar (if you can bear it!) it's wonderful for healing and will deter flies and other hens from mithering it.
Janet G
Thanks for the help. I'd read the sticky & it gave me some hope. She's made it through the night & tail is up. She was under the weather with the lung infection, which flared up in my old hens 5 days after introducing 2 new hens, who are healthy but one may have been a carrier I guess. I'm carrying on with the salt water & will get some tar to try. Janet
The Dogmother
I think I read somewhere that bathing with a weak solution of Hibiscrub will work too.
Janet G
The vet used Hibiscrub so I asked about getting some, but she said it could prevent healing so the salt water was better. Anyway so far so good with the this & purple spray, I haven't been able to get stockholm tar locally. Hen is lively, eating, taking her meds like a good 'un & desperate to rejoin the flock. Although she is chief hen & can usually more than look after herself, I'm wary in case the others peck at her rear end. Janet
The Dogmother
I'd wait until she's healed a bit before putting her back.
