Solitary chicken - need advice

Hi guys,

 

Firstly, thanks for all the advice over the past months - I've not been posting but doing a lot of reading and you all helped out on so many occasions. So thank you!

 

Anyway, I have 2 ISA chickens and my partner and I are thinking of buying a walk in run for our spoiled ladies. Having looked at the size of the thing I thought it would be a good idea to perhaps keep just a few other types of birds in there - for example finches. We're thinking creating a perch for them as well as a little house on the side. Has anybody seen this being done, or have done this themselves? Is the walk in run by Omlet a suitable place?

Frankly, the hens would kill them. Also you would increase the risk of cross contamination with a whole range of bugs. They aren't related to pterodactyls for nothing!

 

I should just enjoy enriching the WIR for your chickens and if you have room, get some more.

The Omlet WIR has mesh that is too big for most small birds

 

You could do this in a run with small mesh but would need a barrier between the small birds and the hens either vertically or horizontally could work. I have seen a WIR with rabbit hutches fitted at chest height all around the walls to utilise the space well above the hen's heads, these were used for broodies and chicks which I thought was clever.
