Weirdness in the nestbox

Recommended Posts

Hello

Hope this is the right forum section

I currently have 2 chooks that are laying. A maran bantam and a Wyandotte/legbar bantam cross that lays blue/green eggs. They are both around 11months old. They both started laying in September and have pretty much laid regularly since. Margaret(son named her!), the blue egger, went broody for a bit end of October but has been laying again since November. From Friday until yesterday, Margaret had not laid.. A couple of times she went into the nesting box, but no result. The maran also failed to lay over the weekend. The weather has been horrific so I put it down to that. Then, on Monday I found a grey/fleshy "something" in the nest box.. Tbh I didn't look at it too closely- bit grim! Also I thought it maybe a First "effort" from one of the other chooks that haven't laid yet.. Anyway. The Maran laid again yesterday and today. Also today, when collecting the Marian's (Chickery Cheroo) egg, I noticed that Margaret had laid on the far edge of the rails on the cube.. I thought this was a bit weird as none of these chooks have ever laid anywhere other than the nest box. I managed to retrieve the egg, which was not bloody, perfectly formed, decent size, but covered in gunk- raw egg white poss? Both chooks and all their pals seem well, normal behaviour, eating, clean, clear vents.. Any idea what's going on anyone?

The fleshy "something" is a lash. You'll find info about it if you search on the forum. Gross but fairly common and not usually anything serious!

They often lay an egg that's different in some way away from the nestbox - they must sense it's not normal. Not sure what the gunk is but if she carries on laying normally now, it shouldn't be anything to worry about.
