Price of supermarket eggs

Recommended Posts

I don't buy supermarket eggs but I do keep an eye on prices, as I sell any spares. Either I've got it wrong or supermarkets' eggs have dropped in price. 6 'free range' medium eggs £1 at Tesco and Sainbury's. I was selling my eggs for more! Think I'll have to rethink. Any theories why the prices have dropped?

'Loss leader' perhaps, designed to get you into the store to shop? Or maybe there is a glut of eggs on the market because everyone who has chickens at home now has them laying after the Winter break?

I wouldn't change your prices unless people stop buying from you.

Definitely a loss leader.

Put it this way, I have always sold my girls eggs for £1.50 for 6 and usually that's 2 bantam and 4 large fowl eggs.

Took 6 boxes into work today after a busy bank holiday weekend of my girls laying and could have sold them twice over. In fact, my colleagues have said they'd pay more.

You can't beat the taste, I've got so many people hooked in my office.... I feel like I'm pushing some addictive substance  I get people coming up to me asking "Have you got eggs?" "When can I get some next?" "Your eggs are far nicer than shop eggs" etc etc!

People pay more for quality products!

Completely agree - once someone has tried my eggs they come back for more, I sell at £1.50 for six. That may be more than Te$co, but - free range or not - once you've seen the colour of the yolks of supermarket eggs, there's no comparison.

I nearly posted on this last week when my daughter showed me eggs she got from tesco (half doz free range eggs for £1). I couldn't believe it and when I told OH he said loss leader too. (Sadly I didn't have any spare eggs on that particular day and she wanted to make a sausage toad). I was thinking they can't possibly be making any profit on eggs at that price - either that or they are telling porkies about them being free range. People I know who buy my eggs though tell me that they would much rather buy the eggs from my girls any day, but I'm feeling seriously undercut

Sold 3 boxes of medium and large multicoloured eggs in work today at £1.50 each. Plenty of compliments from these people but I'm pretty sure some people compare with the price of supermarket eggs. I'm just amazed that eggs seem to have gone down in price quite drastically, yet I thought everything went up in price over time, not down. Too many eglu and chicken fans about, obviously. these supermarkets just can't compete with us chicken keepers.
