tinkkletoes
Hi all has anybody else had a sneezing hen ? well that's what it sounds like. i have one that sneezes every now and again when she comes out of coop in the morning then nothing all day. and another that sneezes once in a while any time of the day, normally only once in that day. other than that all is OK with them all. eating, drinking, scratching around & laying as normal. there is no discharge from their nostrils. am i just a little heavy handed with the red mite powder in the coop bedding or is there something i should be worrying about. Beantree
Sounds like it is just dust in the coop Tinkkletoes. It is irritating them and I am concerned what effect breathing that dust in all night will have on them. Dusty bedding can bring respiratory infections with it. Of course when they flap their wings in the coop it will raise any dust in there. Mite powder is meant for external application only. My thoughts are clean the stuff out of the coop and put fresh bedding in only, no mite powder. Some chickens seem to suffer from hay fever. We've had several develop puffy eyes and sneezes with tree pollen. Take them into the house for a day and they are fine!
