Eggshell
One of my new chickens has just laid her first egg and there's a tiny smear of blood on it. The egg isn't broken and she looks fine. Is this normal or is there something I should be doing about it? She also laid it out in the run, but I think that was because 'top chicken' was in the nest box when she needed to use it too - she'd been in and out a lot before the egg appeared. Beantree
That's quite normal Eggshell. A bit of over-stretching delivering the first egg. We have one laying in the run occasionally still, after 12 months. When she hears the treat scoop being shaken she dashes out of the nest box and drops it in the run in her excitement. I'd only worry if blood on the egg is repeated regularly, because it could be the start of a prolapse. Worth looking at her vent regularly then. Eggshell
OK, that's reassuring. Thanks, Beantree.
