Are Cochins Shy

Recommended Posts

Morehens disease struck again this week, the second time in as many months and I have acquired 2 Cochin hens. Thye are approx 11 weeks old - a mottled and a partridge. They are currently located in a temporary coop in a small run that is situated in the larger area where my resident girls free range during the day.

They seem very shy - and tend most of the time crouched under the shelter I have provided for them in case of rain/sun or the partridge disappears into the coop at times. None of the other hens ever seemed this timid and even my little banties which I got a few weeks back seemed more nosy/outgoing.

Is it just that they need to settle in and get used to routine? I would really appreciate anyone experience with Cochins and any tips or hints people may have about settling them in.

Thanks!

Cochins can be shy and retiring, a bit like orps. They are docile, the gentle giants of the poultry world tend to be more placid in my experience. Give them some time, and get them used to you and their new surroundings and the other birds, 11 weeks is still very young, so it will get better.

Thanks so much for the reply. I think maybe because they are so big, I forget they are still young. I went into their run last night and spent some time just sitting in there chatting to them :D Will keep doing that. I think when I first introduce them to the others I'll just put them in with the bantams as hopefully there might be slightly less handbags and I want them to share the classic with the banties.
