Leicester_H
Hi OH and I have old mobile phones (PAYG) for emergency/occasional use. Phoning each other is not a problem but recently SOME sms messages have been delayed for an hour or so. We think it was because his location was switching between Virgin and Orange Network (we have fixed this by setting phone NOT to automatically switch networks). I posted problem on Virgin support forum and reply was "As these phones are both quite old, they're unable to connect to the 3G networks. As some of the 2G networks have been decommisioned, I'm afraid there's not much more we can do on our side for this. " I don't understand this reply. The phones work OK for making phone calls - its just SOME sms messages are randomly delayed. Are the systems not backwardly compatible ? (so 2G phone would work on 3G network but just wouldn't get the full benefits, speed etc ?). If not, when they remove masts, everyone in area would have to upgrade phones ? Do phones use different networks for calls and messages ? The phones show 80-90% signal strength - what does this mean if they can't actually connect to the network ? Anyone know about these things ? (Edited to add, interestingly, on the Virgin website, their Mobile Coverage Checker (http://store.virginmedia.com/virgin-media-mobile/coverage-checker.html) says 2G voice, text, email signal strength is excellent in the locations in question) Thanks, H

To be fair out here the signal is not very good or missing completely .... Sorry to be no help ....
Bramble
I too frequently get texts that are delayed, often by several hours, some never turn up at all - the really annoying ones are those that are mixed up with stuff from another text by the same person. On the whole, the service is pretty good, but we seem to go through bad spells of texts going missing/being delayed/getting mixed up. Sorry, that's no help either, but thought it might help to know you're not alone!!!
