Egg formation

Recommended Posts

Some eggs we get have a lumpy bit of shell formation on the end - almost like the last little bit of egg has been filled in by someone being very slap-dash with some cement. I assume this is just variability one gets? Then one egg had a sort of hole with a granular appearance - sorry the photo is not quite in focus. Is this just something that can happen, or something to indicate a concern? I think the same hen laid a perfectly ordinary egg today but can't be certain. I did google and found a sheet by Alltech called '20 common egg shell problems' which seems designed to make you worry about every egg ever laid, yet this wasn't represented.

The others were extra lumpy bits of shell, but in the photo the egg is actually not quite completed - it has a hole but with a dark granular bit in it, as if the egg wasn't quite finished. Need to know more about how eggs are made!

Oops just realised - is there a separate egg topic? Am I posting in chickens and talking about eggs? :shameonu:

We have one girl laying eggs this year with extra shell 'blobs' on the outside. She's never laid like that before and it must cause some discomfort. She is over three years old now so perhaps age has something to do with it. I know it is more common in hybrids because it can be a side effect of the IB immunisation virus.
