mimi5
So it's 6 weeks today. Martha must have had a light bulb moment, because yesterday she laid her first egg since brooding and hatching the chicks. I let her out as she was pacing up & down thinking she might have had enough of them......nope she didn't go more than a few inches before she was calling the chicks :roll:so back in she went. So today she seemed to want out......opened the classic run door, off she went a happy as a lark, not so much as a backward glance at her chicks. She had the longest dust bath ever and then wanted to lay an egg in the cube nest box! Normal service has resumed It amazes me every time Each of my broody hens have left their chicks on the day it's 6 weeks

mimi5
Hi there Mars I think it can vary from hen to hen But I've had 3 hatches all with pekins and each of them has left on the 6 week anniversary Just keep an eye on your hen, she will let you know when she's done with her mummy duties What did you hatch? Are they from your own eggs? I had a high rate of boys this hatch 6 boys and 2 girls, but at least I did get 2 girls My gang are 7 weeks today, they are huge now. Mars
I am waiting mimi The eggs from my own hens. I have one rooster for 18 hens and all are young so the hatch rate wasn't so good. The rooster is a white rooster looks like the one in the photo. I bought it at 12 weeks old. they told me it was a white leghorn, I don't know if it is a leghorn The eggs are mostly from white stars and some Buff Orpington hens. but all the feathers on the chicks are white so far
