Binview
Hi am new to chicken keeping ! I've had my ladies coco & ruby since the 1st of August. They were both sleeping inside the coop until ruby started going on the roof now coco has joined her. Rain & wind nothing seems to bother them. Am not concerned about foxes as there coop is in a large secure run, fingers crossed ! Any ideas why they prefer outside to a nice dry & cosy coop. Coco does go in to lay her egg, we are still waiting on Ruby to start laying. Thanks
Beantree
It may be they prefer outside Binview, but more often it is a sign of red mite in the coop. Worth checking for them as they may have come in with the hens you bought and since multiplied in the coop, although it is only two weeks they do multiply rapidly. Place to check is at the perch ends, in the bedding near the sides and in the nest box material. There may be a lack of ventilation in their coop and they feel uncomfortable in it overnight. As a guide I've found the total ventilation areas should be 10% of the total coop floor area. What coop have you got for them?
