Feather Loss

Recommended Posts

I have recently had new chickens, to start off with they had the run of the garden as my partner was off work, we saw that Aggie was taking feathers from the other three but one especially. Its got to the point now that poor Betty has lost them on her legs back and crop. I have sprayed her with anti-pek but it looks like to no avail.I have just ordered the camo vest for her but is there anything else I can do. They have grit food clean water and meal worms given to them every other day. The run is 3 metres long they have a hanging thing to play with that is full of food. She is eating and drinking ok but I am at a loss as to why Aggie is doing it.I am loath to give them the run of the garden while we are at work just in case of predators.

I think it has become a habit and what may have started it was giving them lots of space ie the whole garden and then putting them in a confined area. You have tried anti peck spray which I have found never to work when it gets to that extent so the only choice you have is to fit a bumpa bit to the aggressor, either that or separate Aggies for a few weeks and that will give her time lose her status and will give the others time to recover and regain confidence.

I can't see you have much other choice I'm afraid.

I would not let them free range or have the garden if you are not there to supervise them because of the risk of a fox attack.
