Poorly Welsummer

Recommended Posts

Hi all, last week Issey my Welsummer (3 years old) seemed a bit off colour. She was standing on her own, not eating, and had her eyes closed. I bought some Nutridrops and gave her the chicken tonic diet, scrambled egg, porridge oats, natural yoghurt and apple sauce and after a couple of days she seemed fine. She was eating again, picking up mealworms and pecking at the broccoli. She has always been a very quiet stand alone chicken so hard to tell if she is back to normal or still poorly, but I took eating to be a good sign.

Yesterday morning her left eye is completely swollen. I have tried to look in it to see if she has an injury but it is so puffy you can hardly see the eye.

She has an appointment with the vet at 4.15 tonight but does anyone have any idea? I really hope this isn't going to be a) expensive and b) labour intensive, as I am rehoming a cat tomorrow who is likely to be both.

Thanks

I would bathe the eye with cool black tea or boiled water to see if you can open it to look for a grass seed or similar.

How is the other eye?

TBH, if only one eye is affected, it is more likely to be a foreign body, but if it has got infected, it may be past the bathing stage, and need some antibiotic drops/ointment.

Do let us know how you get on.

Thank you but apparently it is mycoplasma. She now has antibiotics to go in her water, well they all do. He is hopeful she should recover and the eye should sort itself out. It was open a little bit this evening, which is better than yesterday, so hopefully it was resolving slightly before she started the antibiotics
