It has loads of patterns (many free too) and people upload their work, tips and their difficulty rating too. No doubt someone clever in knitting will be along with a good suggestion. I have a book I use, but I've heard a lot of people praising this site winwick mum - there's a basic sock pattern which is supposed to be very good. Ravelry will certainly have some patterns. I highly recommend self-patterning sock yarn, creates stripes without any effort! I believe Patsylabrador has been knitting socks, she might have some suggestions.
