robskyd
Has anyone ever let their birds have a rummage in the grass clippings from the lawn mower? Our 3 love to peck at the lawn and I'm tempted to drop a small pile in their extended run for them to 'play' in! Any advice would be appreciated. arowland17
I've think I've read on here somewhere it can block their crops if they're given clippings???
Cinnamon
Long bits of anything can block the crop, & sometimes grass clippings are long, so I would probably avoid doing this. I know its not recommended to feed horses grass cut from a mower because of a chance of oil being on the grass clippings too............... Wait a month or so, make a big pile of dead leaves from your garden & let them play in those - they love it!
Dogs Too
I DO give mine grass clippings. But I make sure that the grass is not too long before being cut and ensure that they have plenty of grit. All I can say is the grass all goes, either scattered or eaten. I also use the chickens to weed the shrubbery, all the long grass goes and they kick out all the dead leaves and scratch over the soil, and, by way of thanking me for their fun, they manure it too!! I have a friend with 14 chickens who gives all her grass clippings to her birds as do all her neighbours!! She been doing it for years with no probs. BUT I would be cautious about giving clippings cut from an petrol mower due to oil contamination.
arowland17
our grass is a bit long at the moment, but when OH actually cuts it weekly it is very short so I might give them the very short clippings as they're always pecking the grass! I put grit in with their pellets and it all gets eaten so may be a good way of disposing of the grass clippings! at the moment we have to bag them all up and transport them over to my parents house as they have a bigger garden and our compost bin can't cope with the volume!
