mum2boys
Hi... I am still humming and haa'ing (will get there eventually! ) and am now thinking more about breeds - ds has decided that *his* bird will be a silkie which is fine but they don't lay a great number of eggs and I am now wondering about having mixed breeds.. we need small/medium birds that can cope with being confined in a run most but not all of the time, that are docile and friendly for young children and can't fly! I would like to get a decent amount of eggs from at least 1 hen! what breeds would you suggest that would fulfil the above?! Will mixed breeds be ok together? thanks, m2b
Egluntyne
Mixed breeds should be OK together, except the usual advice is not to mix bantams with larger hens, as the bigger ones might make mincemeat of the smaller ones. However, some on the forum have mixed them successfully.
Cinnamon
The best thing is to go to a breeder or stockist, like a Medowsweet agent, & just pick ones you like the look of. Half the time your hen will pick you, not the other way around!
