Ziggy
Hi all, I'm a little puzzled to find that one of our chooks seems to be eating her own egg... or whoever eats it, instead of having two eggs most days as we have had for the last few months, we now just have one, and some bits of shells... The chooks have had their usual supply of pellets and kitchen s"Ooops, word censored!"s, I gave them some more grit too... Has anyone experienced this before? I am a bit puzzled cause only one egg is eaten, not both...
Martin B
It is not uncommon. One of Lesley's hens used to eat her eggs, I'm sure people who have experience with this sort of thing will be along soon.
sebowyer
This is fairly common, unfortunately. The way round it is to collect the eggs quite soon after they've been laid and, if that doesn't work, buy a rubber egg and put it in with the real ones. They'll soon learn! Martin B
Oh, apparently fill an egg with chilli powder and put it in the nest box.
Ziggy
chilli powder???? I am trying to be quicker at going to take the eggs in the morning, hoping that will solve the problem... I'll try the rubber egg too... Thanks everyone, it's always reassuring to know that something is not uncommmon, as I worried one of the chooks might be deficient in something... Chickaboo
I'm afraid my Ruby used to eat her eggs It seemed to start when one got broken, presumably by accident and she got taste for it, doing it at any oppourtunity. I really didn't like it and started pouring cold water over her to make her stop (a bit cruel in hindsight, and didn't even work)!! Apart from anything else I wanted to eat the eggs! The Pearsons
I have not had to do this (yet) but have been told a sure fire cure is to make holes at the top and bottom of an egg and blow through one end (put a bowl under the other end) and you will blow the inside of the egg out. (I have dome that bit before!) Then fill the empty shell with a chilli, mustard pepper mix and seal the ends of the egg (glue maybe???) Put this back in the nest. When the hen comes to eat the inside they will get a very nasty shock and you should have a cure. Good luck!!!! Helen in Hume
