I put it on my laptop because I wanted to check emails when the kids were on the PC but keep the emails coming to the PC so they were all in the same place. I'm a bit of PC geek admittedly but I find it really handy - especially if you're a forum fanatic and have emails constantly arriving! All it does really is save you opening your email programme to check if anything's come in but it's really good when you're on the forum 'cos you can instantly see when you get a topic notification.
