Guest
what do you feed them? how old are they? how long have you had them? I feed mine layers mash with a bit of mixed grit/oyster shell sprinkled in and then seperate pots of mixed grit for them to have as they wish- we occasionally add crushed egg shell to their mash also. We did have a cple of very thin shelled eggs but DH had stopped adding the grit to the mash, he started adding it again and we've had no thin shelled eggs since. I think there are various reasons why hens lay "squishy" eggs but the above questions would probably help in answering your question. BeckyBoo
I've never used oyster shell so can't tell you, ours have their pellets in the morning then when they go back in after free ranging they get a small plant pot of grit and a medium sized one of corn to munch on. When I've got about a dozen egg shells I bakd them crush them and feed them to the girls as well. That seems to keeo them fairly well sorted. Westie
Your chucks will look after themselves if you put a small bowl of oyster shell in, or mix it with grit. If you want, you could mix a small amount in mash potato or something. There can be problems if you give them too much so my advise would be to let them help themselves and see how it goes. If you use egg shell, remember to bake it first to get rid of any bacteria and grind it up - you don't wanting them becoming partial to a freshly laid egg! I put about 1 or 2 tablespoons a day in their mash for the 3 of them and they seem to eat it all up. Is this too much and what problems should I be looking for if it is.
