Guest
I am just a click away from buying a Mk1 Eglu - I already have a Mk2 Has anyone got a one of each? Can they pm the benefit of their advice before I jump in with both feet please? Edited January 29, 2006 by Guest
Mrs Frugal
Are you sure you have a Mark I Kooringa? I thought yours was more recent than that. The Mark II came into production around late May last year so anything since then is a Mark II. If it has two sets of wooden bars - one long set and one short set, it's a Mark II but if there are several single bars as well, it's a Mark I. Hope this helps. Lesley's got both models so I'm sure she'll be along sooner or later to let you know her opinions on both.
Guest
Typo error Kate - thanks - just corrected it. Yes my Mk2 I have had since November - just a couple of months
Guest
Yoo hooo LESLEY Can you spare a minute please. I need some help! Not huge life changing decision - but big for me!
Mrs Frugal
Thought so! I've sent Lesley a PM so I'm sure she'll be along soon to give you the lowdown. Sounds exciting though Kooringa. Mine's a Mark I and it's absolutely fine although I think the Mark II is probably easier to clean and is also slightly larger than the original version. Guest
I am tempted by the Mk1, and also by a Mk2 blue one - or possible both - I am a bit smitten. I really want to get some banties - blame Clare! Decisions decisions.
Mrs Frugal
Oooo, I'd like a blue MarkII too! No money at the moment so don't worry!! I won't be a gazumper! Good luck whatever you decide, Kooringa. Eglu owning certainly does seem addictive!
Guest
Hmm it sure is. OH is not too impressed with this addiction - says it will be more of a tie if we want to go away. I say what's the difference feeding 3 or 5. (What I didn't actually say is three and five! ) Pets are a tie so having more of the same sort doesn't make a lot difference does it? All together now - NO of course not! He's reading his paper now - and is resigned to the fact that I always come up with sane answers to all his objections! Poor man - he does get well fed though! chocchick
Good grief chickens are taking over the World! I'm still hoping to sneak one extra into my eglu, and OH is mellowing. Don't think it makes that much difference adding a few more, unless you had to apply lice powder to 8 chickens, then I think it would. Sheilaz
...I say what's the difference feeding 3 or 5. (What I didn't actually say is three and five! ) No need to give away all the details at this stage! Pets are a tie so having more of the same sort doesn't make a lot difference does it? All together now - NO of course not! No, of course not!....quite right Kooringa. To make your decision, here are some points to help rationalise your thoughts (I've no idea why, I was impulsive! ) Are your 3 in the Eglu run? If so, you'll be having 2 lots in their runs, not integrated? That's one way. If not, you'd be trying to merge the 2 "flocks"? Two hesitations; One, there would be mix of bantams & larger birds, but you can find out what others say, as I have no experience of that. Secondly, I found it hard to get 2 lots back into 2 Eglu runs, after their roaming. Eventually, we built a foxproof hen garden which means they can all be semi selfsufficient (ideal for going away) and you can lock them all in within 2 seconds just before dusk, letting them totter into Eglus when ready. Hope this helps you think about what is right for your set up. I only have mark ones...quite enough really, but of course you can get more in a mark 2! PS. Treacle sponge pudding with extra custard for tonight, dear?
Guest
Thank you hugely for that. I have a pen at the moment with one Eglu with run in it and a covered dust bath it is 20+ft x 11ft so not really big enough to put 2 eglus in with runs attached. I would need to do modifications to cover the top of the run like yours. Still lots to think about then. It was just the patter of tiny feet that appealed to me. - Not treacle pud - he had a big raspberry pud topped with a mixture of jumbo oats, muscovado sugar and a bit of flour and a teensy bit of butter - which turned out like a lovely dark brown sponge with a crispy top texture. Today we are having a giant Toad in the hole with - (cooked all in one in my Ramoska) With home made garlic and herb sausages and of course three gorgeous egg from the girls - one of which weighed 80grams in the batter.. The veggies - leeks, carrots, parsnips dug up yesterday and our spuds - all home grown too. If he would let me have a pig then the sausages would have been home grown ! Best not push my luck had I? Thanks for that Sheila - I love your run - I keep going to the gallery and day dreaming. Not a DIY man sadly - but he is doing the ironing as I speak. Which is much better! Sheilaz
20' x 11' sounds big enough for 2 Eglus if you have them on a platform, therefore without the runs and with all the hens integrated! Sorry, shouldn't be adding to your dilemma. I can't take any credit for Eglu towers which is Lesley & Carl's picture in the gallery. But, it was the inspiration for Chickenopolis! We are both hopeless at DIY, but OH took it on as a challenge and with a deadline as we had a holiday booked and it worked out OK. Hard work & expensive though. I know what you mean, I have toi not even look at banties! PS Yum, that pudding sounds good!
Guest
More decisions - I am so impulsive - once I get an idea in my head I am dreadful - thought it might wear off with old age! Where's that purple Eglu then? Off to nosh - my stomach is convinced I have been decapitated - instead of being captivated - which I am - with those darn irrestible chooks - and I have only had them a couple of months with rain, snow, hail, frost, rain, rain, frost, snow a couple of dry days.............What am I like? Sheilaz
You'll be even worse in the summer then! (liked the word transformation with captivated, a good crossword clue)
Lesley
I've sent Kooringa a PM but I think most differences between the Eglus have been mentioned on here - I'll go back and read it properly now.
Lesley
Mark 2 is easier to clean than a Mark 1 - but a Mark 1 is still easy and so much better than any other style that I have used If the price is right - go for it. We have all three Eglus up on a platform which means the hens are able to use all the floor space. We have half of one run in the ares backed against the netting so that if we need to isolate just one chicken it is easy to lure them into and close the door. We used it when our previous Whitestar had a prolapse so that the others couldn't peck her and it gave us time to sort out another temporary home for her while she recovered. I hope I'm not too late Kooringa.
Guest
You'll be even worse in the summer then! (liked the word transformation with captivated, a good crossword clue) Coo I didn't know I was that clever - there is a word for that isn't there? The hunger pangs must have sharpened my befuddled brain! It won't work again now as I am stuffed with lunch. phew - will just have to surf here then won't I?
