vida
Hi every body, does anyone know why all of our chickens have started to lay eggs with spots on them? Is there any thing wrong with them? Vida
Guest
we get little spots of what looks like blood sometimes on the shell, I think it just happens sometimes an isn't anything to worry about but I'd be interested to hear what other people say. ktdot
One of mine sometimes has small brown 'freckles' on her eggs and another can have white 'chalky' patches or the whole egg can be covered in it. Everyday different!
Snowy
I have one who always lays brown speckled eggs, another lays white speckled eggs (brown with white speckles I should say). Others are usually plain, but are oftened speckled with either white or brown. Not sure why, but it happens enough for me to think it is quite normal. Couperman
Speckles of 'blood' (it appeared brown on ours) on eggs are usually nothing to worry about, streaks can be a sign of red mite apparently. We had a few dotted eggs when the chooks first started laying but not so much now. Some hens just like decorating thier eggs like that. Kev. Guest
Speckles of 'blood' (it appeared brown on ours) on eggs are usually nothing to worry about, . if you look at one that's just that second been laid, the spots appear reddder and then, as it drys, they turn brown. Yes, blood does that, spots on the shell are due to overstraining ie internal, and common in new layers, streaks on the shell are due to other problems ( external) as the egg passes through the vent, hence the concern about red mite. I don't mean to be a smart alec but I have definately read that somewhere!! Apologies to the author of the book I read this in, but it's late and I can't find the exact section in the few I could find in the bookcase! but I will credit you when I find it! I think it was Katie Thear's 'Starting with Chickens' Kev
vida
Thanks everbody for the informative replies. The spots are not blood , so no mites.I think it is them being over active as said. My mind is at rest now. Vida
