MaxBaz Posted April 7, 2008 Share Posted April 7, 2008 Anybody got any bright ideas how to attach a perch for the girls within the 2m cube run? Was told that they like to have the option of being off the ground sometimes - but the wire/mesh in the cube doesn't really easily allow you to poke a strong enough bit of wood through. They absolutely refuse to use the ladder provided with the cube - my husband had to make them a little "ramp" - fussy things. Anybody else tried it and succeeded? A few bits of wood and nails... oh but you do have to get in the cage. cos we've put it against the cube house section, they just jump across to it from the door - or just jump from the ground. have you got a cube or an eglu? Bondinho Posted April 7, 2008 Share Posted April 7, 2008 I've pocked some tree branches through the wire on my cube run. I think I've put one too high though as none of them use it but they stand on the other one occasionally when chilling out. You can get quite thick branches and then just file down the two ends with a stanley knife or a saw blade so that it fits securely into the mesh holes. ajm200 Posted April 7, 2008 Share Posted April 7, 2008 We just got a bit of wood from B&Q that was small enough to poke through the bars and hold it in place with cable ties. Its 3x2cm, was long enough to make two perches and cost less than 2 quid. We sanded the corners to round them off a bit to make it more comfy on the chooks feet. It's not elegant but it works. So far it's proving very popular. Often 4 out of 5 manage to squeeze onto it. I really must install the second one to stop them squabbling and pushing each other off. We've just got one extension on it and the space outside the cube is wasted really, but they love this and it took about 30mins to build and probably no more than 10 bits of wood ... all pre cut bits from B&Q, but OH isn't great at DIY so you could do it quicker and cheaper i'm sure. Someone else (i think it may have been Aunty e) had also done one, but much bigger with 2 extra sections and it was at the door end, that was our inspiration. Considering the cost of our setup and all the treats, it may well be the most expensive egg ever but seeing my sons face when he finds it will be priceless Our perch isn't a cool as LJ's but here is a pic anyway. I found a largest branch ( about 2" diameter ) wrapped strong wire around it at each end , and wound the other ends of the wire through the cage roof, so it's sort of suspended (like a trapeze ! ), make sure the branch is wedged right up against the sides of the run so it doesn't swing ( unless your chooks like swinging ! ) my chooks love their perch, there's often 4 of them squeezed on it together.
