But whens the next one coming?

Recommended Posts

On Saturday George laid her first egg. Her cell-mate Mildred (who's been laying for 3 weeks) did her best to stop her by running around the garden screeeching at the top of her voice whenever George went into the Eglu, intruding on her while she was on the nest and just generally being a pest. It took the poor girl all day to get the thing out. In human terms I think it would be the equivalent of a 48 hour labour! Honestly, some chooks are so insensitive

We haven't had another egg from George since and I'm wondering whether Mildred has stressed her out too much or this is otherwise quite normal. Mildred has laid every day without a break including 3 enormous double yolkers, so I thought George would be the same. I've checked all over the garden in case she's made another nest but haven't found one. One thing I did notice which I was quite chuffed about is the day before George laid her first egg, she couldn't keep her beak out of the oyster shell. They really do know what their little bodies need

my second chicken didn't lay regularly for about 2 weeks - she laid a soft shell then a few days later a beauty then nothing for aboujt a week - I though she would never get into her stride but now it's every day like her friend - their bodies just need a bit of time to get into the swing of it, but I'm sure she will be laying every day very soon :D

Thanks for the encouragement. This morning she is waddling like a duck and I'm sure there's an egg in there somewhere. I've confined her and Mildred to the run (which they hate!) for a couple of hours to see if anything happens. At the moment the two of them are honking away madly to be let out. Honestly they make the most un-chicken-like noises I've ever heard. They actually sound a little like geese atm.
