Daisy's mum
Hello all Just wondered if it is OK to put chicken poo round the base of my, planted last year, fruit trees? The compost bin is full so for the last 3 days I have spread the poo round the trees but then I read that it can"burn" plants. Does this mean trees too. As soon as I have made my raised beds I can empty the bin but that won't be of another week and I hate to waste the stuff I am new to this gardening lark so please excuse if this is a silly question Julie x
Keanie Bean
I have seen someone on here ( sorry cant remember who) say that they make thiers into a soup. I'm presuming this literally waters it down so its more friendly to the plants which cant hack it. No doubt they will be along soon and give some more detailed advice. Daisy's mum
Thank you Sarah! I know that neat poo is not good for plants but not so sure about trees Julie x
Olly
I'd have thought a tree would be ok - they are bigger, and their roots are deeper, so by the time it filters down there it will be diluted a bit. Fresh chicken poo is quite acidic, and it can 'burn' tender plants. I haven't tried it on trees, but I would have thought it's a safer bet. Daisy's mum
Thats what I thought Olly but I just wanted to be sure. It is funny but I just don't want to waste any of it I was putting it into the compost bin wrapped in the newspaper lining from the poo tray but now don't use the paper as I read somewhere that you shouldn't compost newspaper BTW have you noticed that you only seem to get normal poo's in the poo tray but yuckky ones outside? Whats that all about They only seem to do yucky poos in the day time Julie x

fairy&cake
i dont know about trees, but: Onions, spinach and sweet peas apparently LOVE it in the base of the plant pot/tub or bed. Our farmer grows hundreds of onions with hers.

Guest
Your fruit trees would probably prefer a healthy serving of potash. Heres a link to an article about feeding trees http://www.telegraph.co.uk/gardening/main.jhtml?xml=/gardening/2006/02/25/dtglist250206.xml Cabbages like chicken manure! ubereglu
If you're thinking of growing pumpkins/squashes or runner beans you can dig a trench or hole in advance and fill it in with chicken poo, and then dig it back over with topsoil. If you do this now it will biodegrade a bit before you get round to planting your plants and will help your plants no end! Hope that helps, Liz
