Guest
I sure I read somewhere last year that to grow garlic all you need to do is plant a bulb, or is it a clove? Not sure! Has anyone else managed to grow garlic before, if so, how did you do it?!
motherhen
It's the individual cloves you plant - somewhere sunny and well-drained. I usually plant mine in the autumn and they are ready to harvest the next summer when the tops start dying off. It is recommended that you plant garlic sold for planting, rather than garlic for eating from a shop - probably due to possible virus spread or chemicals used to treat shop garlic to stop it sprouting. I think it is possible to plant in the spring but hopefully someone will confirm this.
Guest
Would they be alright in the greenhouse, or do they need to be planted outside?
motherhen
I do mine in pots as well as in the ground. There is one way to find out - try a few in a pot in the greenhouse - the extra warmth will hopefully get them going quicker
Guest
Think I'll give them a go in the greenhouse - I've not really got any more space left in the veg patch, and the wait for an allotment seems to be neverending!
N&J
The beauty about Garlic is that it is quite hardy and will grow anywhere - I would save you greenhuose for plants that need protection ie Toms, Lettuce etc. All you need to do is plant the cloves and leave it for 6-9 months - it really is that easy
Trish
My ground was too wet to plant in November so the garlic went in end of March when it was drier. Hopefully it will still do well
motherhen
I'm sure one of the things I've read about garlic is the importance of waiting till spring to plant if the ground it is going in will be cold and wet over the winter - good luck
Mel (& Paul)
We've planted our garlic - so fingers crossed for us too
Hellcat
Just used the last of last years crop. Lovely it was too - although the cloves were small, it was so rich in flavour. Ian planted them late, no problems. they seem to like almost mediterranean conditions - slightly sandy soil, lots of sun... Good luck!
