dog attack

Recommended Posts

a neighbours dog came thru the hedge while the chooks were in the garden, and chased them around capturing one of them. havin pulled the dog off (german sheperd) was surprised the chook was still alive but at first look does not seem too bad apart from some damage towards her tail end. two others continued to appear unfazed by it all but one was obviously affected by makin alot of noise, while the chook which was attacked was very quiet but does seem to be pecking in the run for food.

is there anything i can do to try to calm them down or is it a case of wait and see what happens.this happened about an hour ago

i was reading about a terrible dog attack in Practical Poultry and the lady whose chickens it happened to is trying to get legislation put in place to make owners more responsible.

Irresponsible dog owners really make my blood boil

You could try them with a little sugared water (for the shock) or some rescue remedy if you have it? Try and take their minds off it with their favourite treats.

If she looks okay and is eating and drinking then probably best to leave her with her friends for the night and just hope she hasn't had too much of a shock.

Let us know how she is tomorrow.

Oh sorry to hear that hope she's ok. I would try the rescue remedy. Is there not some fencing near the hedge to prevent it happening again. May be worth having a polite word with the neighbour to ask them to keep their dog away from your property. Poor chooks. Let us know that she's ok in the morning.

just an update on last nights events. last night they all went to roost as normal and also all came out this mornin showing no ill effects. have been out this mornin and when i came back all four had laid, which i was surprised about. havin seen one of them in the jaws of a german sheperd i cant tell you the relief.

hope there will be no problems ie infection from the dog but touch wood hope things will be ok. as if i was not cautious already when lettin them out with the thought of foxes, i now have the dog. fingers crossed

when i saw "all four had laid" I misread laid as died! can't tell you the relief when I re-read it! I'm so glad they're all okay. Hope you have words with the neighbour!
