can you use crushed eggshells for the chickens grit??

 

I've been on a few different websites and they all say different things!

Sure you can give it to them. You are supposed to put them into a hot oven for 10 minutes or so to get rid of any disease. Then just crush them and ready to go

I know that egg shells are good for giving them calcium, but do they actually function as grit?

 

In other word, if you give them baked and crushed shells, does that make other grit unnecessary?

 

I'm only talking short term and my run will be on soil.

You can use crushed egg shells...as a calicum supplement, but not as a replacement for grit.

 

They need Mixed Poultry Grit for digestion.....it grinds up food in their gizzard.

I used to use parrot grit/shell mix from the pet shop - it's quite fine and I now just use it to start the chicks off on grit. I have a sack of 'proper' poultry grit/shell mix and it's very 'chunky'.

I have just added the mixed chicken grit from the Omlet shop to the delivery of my Cube and Pepperpots tomorrow.

 

I understand that you can either bake the egg shells (at a time when you're using the oven anyway) and you can also microwave them.
