This is my first post and would like to know when we're likely to get our first eggs. We received our green eglu along with Petal (Miss Pepperpot) & Pippa (Gingernut ranger), on 28th March. We were told by the Omlet man, they were 16 or 17 weeks old.Thanks. [/img]

Could be anytime, Egburt. They could start laying anytime between around 18 and 25 weeks of age - sometimes even longer. If they've got nice red combs and are starting to do a funny little squatty tap dance when you go near them, it shows they're mature enough to start laying.

Some people seem to get eggs quickly, my chooks were 17 weeks now 23 weeks and no eggs though Ebony has just started squatting so keeping fingers x'ed!

I think they are more likely to start laying their eggs at the 25 week end of the spectrum.

 

Their combs and wattles will develop and redden and they will start to crouch.

 

When this happens , expect eggs any time!

 

You may also notice a huge increase in their appetites.
