Holiday Blues

Recommended Posts

 Whenever I feel like a rant, I always stop and think how lucky I am anyway and try not to... *sigh*

And in this case, I know how lucky I am to even go on nice holidays away, but with me getting older, and now being employed, it makes the whole process trickier and it just isn't the same anymore. My parents go on more holidays together without me now because I'm usually too busy to come

To make matters worse, my poor elderly springer spaniel would always come with us to holidays and trips in England beside the seaside, and if we went abroad she would go into kennels. Now she's getting older, we feel we can't leave her in kennels.

And to make it worse, we took her to Norfolk last week and she had such a lovely time; though when we got home, she'd been back a day or two and then started acting really funny - it appeared like she had no idea who we were, she was quite frightened, and would hide in the garden. We took her to the vets, and the result was that she is just incredibly old and was likely to be having mini strokes  Now it seems like she's too old to be left alone, or to come with us on even the most calm and peaceful holidays!!

It just seems like a huge transition point  My dad is just about reaching retirement, I'm getting older and heading off to Uni, and my poor old dog is getting very very elderly!! Holidays will never be the same again!

Ummm... Holidays are a mixed blessing at times aren't they... yes we are lucky to have them, and I absolutely love travelling, but the amount of work involved in organising pet care for our menagerie, and organising trips and packing and so on for 6 of us, really gives me headaches at times, especially as DH never helps (he tends to come home from work 30 minutes before it's time to head off to the airport or wherever, just asking if everything is ready... there have been times when he called to say he couldn't come home from wherever he is working, and I should fly on my own with the kids and meet him there!!)...

Animals make things complicated too... my cats are less dependant than dogs, and so are the chooks, but I still feel bad leaving them, though they are well cared for while we are away...

Have you thought of asking a friend or someone to come and stay in your house while you are on holiday? It would limit the disruption for your dog... We are planning to get a dog in a year or two, and it's true that holidays are the one thing I have to do research on, making sure I can find either friends or professional agency housesitters to come and stay at the house while we are away, so I wouldn't have to put the dog in a kennel, it could stay in his own environment, and the cats would have more company too, as would all the other animals...

I remember when my dad decided he was too old for holidays (much to my mum's dismay... dad was, and still isn't, too old, he just can't be bothered even if she wants to go... he's even refusing her a day at the seaside now)... we were not a particularly close family, mum, dad, sis and I, but still the end of those family holidays are an uncomfortable milestone... DH and I occasionally dream of what we'll do when the girls stop going on holiday with us, but to be honest I'm sure we'll feel lost without them... especially as later on in life, they won't be travelling with bags full of nappies and inflatable pool toys... and we won't have to sit on the edge of the pool watching their every movement... I love the family holidays now, with them being small too... it's just a lot of work...

We are starting to realise that we probably only have a few years of family holidays with our girls left before they make their own choices about where they go & who they spaend their time with.

To be honest,we are quite looking forward to it & have some great trips planned, but it won't be the same without them.

My Hubby is like yours Ziggy - leaves everything to me to do

I am so used to it now that I guess its become second nature. At least the girls now pack for themselves, even if I do have to check on the suitability of what they have decided to bring!

Animals - thats a hard one.

We usually get someone to come in for the cat & hens....my vet actually as she lives down the road & does pet sitting in her spare time.

Millie goes into kennels, but we hate leaving her there. It is one of the top 5 kennesls in the country,& is immaculate,& they do adore Millie, & she seems to love it there, but we still get the guilts

What a lovely arrangement... at least you know they're in good hands, and no need to leave emergency vet details :D

Hi Imo

I know what you mean, when I was a child we had a lovely yellow labrador. We got her when I was 4 and my brother was just a baby. We used to take her on all the family holidays we could, to Southwold and the west of Ireland and have many happy memories of family holidays.

She became unwell on what was to be out last family holiday to the west of Ireland. She started to have seizures and in the end had to be put down at the ripe old age of 13. I was devestated at the time, but now, at 25 I look back fondly at those memories and the holidays I have now are very different but just as fun.

Flo
