wet run & wet cochin feet!!

Recommended Posts

Morning all

Having chickens is worse than having kids - always something to worry about! :(

My chick's Elgu run floor is sopping wet the last couple of days due to the rain collecting on the paved floor the run is on. It's easibed, it won't dry out, so at the weekend we are going to raise the run on a layer of loose slabs so the the water doesn't run in.

Meanwhile I've put a cat litter tray in full of dry easibed, and a lump of railway sleeper, so they've got two dry places where they can sit. But they insist on rootling about in the wet bedding and my cochin last night went to bed with little wet feathery feet! This morning they were dry and fluffy again but now getting wetter as the day goes on. :?

Do chickens mind getting wet and will having wet feet do any harm to the cochin? I've read on the net that you shouldn't let this type of chook out in the wet, especially when young.

So now I'm worried, my OH says I mollycoddle them and they are 'JUST CHICKEN'S' - typical bloke!!

Not sure about the wet feet - I thought you had to try and keep the feathered ones dryer if possible. No experience though. At least the bit of dried easibed should help.

My run is sopping at the edges but because of its size it is okay for the most part. I have put a shower curtain at one side now to try and ease off the rain ) it has now stopped here at last. Hopefully aubiose dries off.

When is the nice weather back - my girls are sitting huddled under the Cube everytime it rains :(

My two don't huddle anywhere - they just carry on as normal. I think they are a bit thick bless them!

I have a shower curtain over the run too but it's seeping in from the floor!! I hate this weather!!:evil:

Phew!!

Thanks a lot for the advice Gallina :D

I won't worry so much then, I'm not letting her out at the moment poor thing. Her feet don't look so wet today either as she's spent most of the morning with her bum parked in the litter tray full of easibed - looking out at the rain drops!

I'm hoping we can lay the slabs tonight to get the run up out of the puddles, so they should both be nice and dry then.

Thanks again.

I think it wouldn't be good for them if they were constantly standing in the wet, but as long as they chance to dry out again it should be OK. Mine love being out in the rain - they love all the slugs and worms that surface! And somedays they look like drowned rats! But they have got shelter and dry off quickly once they are all snuggled up together at night 8)

I think it's 'cos they are still quite little that I was so worried. Hopefully the extra layer of slabs will sort it, we're also getting a bale of aubiose this afternoon to put inside as I think it's a bit lighter than easibed and should dry out better.

We normally get slugs that crawl into the run when the weather's wet, there's a couple in there most mornings trying to negotiate the easibed!! The chicks have them for brekkie! Yuk :vom:

The problem occurs when only one slug crawls in - then they fight over it!!

we do regular feet washing here. Its quite easy to do and the chooks actually quite enjoy it. Dont worry too much about them being wet - its mud and wet and a build up of mud on the feathers that could lead to a problem.

We dont have much mud in our garden, I only wash their feet if they are muddy. If they are wet from rain I dont dry them - I let them dry naturally. :)

Thanks Chelsea. I'm glad that I don't have to hold a hair dryer to her at the moment!! :? I don't think she'd appreciate it! (I know I will have to at some stage though).

I need to let them out in a while when OH gets home, as we have to replace all the wet bedding and put some slabs underneath the elgu & run. There's not much actual mud around though, more just wet soil. But knowing her if there is any mud around she will find it!! So will have to keep a careful eye out.

I can't wait to get them off the wet bedding! :D

Flippin' rain, it's hardly stopped here today
