Who else is getting BHWT hens on the 10th May?

Recommended Posts

First post but have been coming hee for ages!

After a long wait we are getting 3 girls from the Surrey rescue and cant wait. Have a nice cube with a perm run (currently bark down but may change that to the horse bedding stuff or wood chips). Need to go get supplies this weekend but we have a Scats store near which does everything we need (including the fake eggs!) so will be spending a small fortune on them.

One question I have, as we are getting mash for them I want to store it in a small shed we bought (one of the tiny Keter sheds, its plastic and about a meter high and 70cm wide) but I need to know what people store there mash in in this kind of situation. The shed will keep it dry but does it need to go into airtight containers or is it OK in the bag? Suggestions on what you store your mash in would be really helpful :-)

Hi

I'm hoping ot get my ex-batts soon but I store all my wild brid feed in a keter plastic shed and it keeps nice and dry. You should keep it in a container though so no pesky little mice can get into it if they sneak in while you have the door open. A container will also keep any flour eating beetles like weevils etc out of it too.

Good luck with the ex-batts - whatt are you going to call them?

The "2nd weekend in May" is the information I've been given from BHWT to date ... so it sounds like the same rescue.

How VERY exciting - I've been waiting months.

Do you know what the set-up is on the day? I have absolutely no idea what to expect.

Also, I have asked for 2 girls but I'm sure that I've read somewhere that you must take a minimum of 3. Any ideas?

I'm getting two ex-batts in Dorset tomorrow Baggins. I'm surprised you haven't had full details from your BHWT contact by now - perhaps an email to put your mind at rest?

I think the "rule of three" only seems to apply if you don't already have chickens. I had no problem with my requirements, in fact I could have obtained just one had I so wished. I intend to house them separately for a month for them to regain their strength and then gradually introduce them to the existing girls.

Generally the BHWT won't let you have fewer than three, so that you reduce the chances of being left with a lone chicken should things go wrong.

Baggins, I have been to someones house to pick them up (my first lot) and then went to a farm for my 3rd lot. If it's the farm then you'll probably have a time to pick them up, go to the farm (with your box for the chickens) and then you can either choose the chickens you want or they are picked out for you. It's such an exciting time.....I can't wait !

had no chance to get on here yesterday :-(

If you are getting hens from this rescue then you should have got a call from them. My OH has all the details of the rescue but I think it is going to be a on mass collection in the afternoon. If you have not heard anything yet them I would send an email or call the main number :-)

As for names I think its going to be Tikka, Nugget and Butter (I think!)

Wife is getting excited but she cannot be there on the weekend that I am collecting them so I am going to be doing a video blog for her!!

I'm picking up 5 ex-batts on the 10th of May and am hoping my resident 5 speckledies aren't too put out by them!

I keep my food in a metal dustbin which works well .

I have a seperate house for the new arrivals and, as it is raised, am hoping their legs will be strong enough to get them up the ladder.

Roll on the 10th!!
