Hi

I didn't get any grit when I got my chickens today. They've got layers pellets at the moment. I've given them garlic powder and poultry spice as well. . Do I need to get this very soon? Where is the best place to get it and is it special chicken grit etc etc.

Sorry, I'm new to this today and am sure will be asking more in the coming days!

Hi and welcome to the wonderful world of chicken keeping :D :D :D

Chickens need grit to help grind up their food so they can absorb all the goodness :D They will eat it along with their pellets and it helps to grind the food whilst in their crops.

You need to buy hen/chicken grit (there is also chick grit which is smaller for chicks and also pigeon grit). You can buy it at all good poultry feed suppliers and also in the Omlet Shop - *grit*

They'll be alright for a few days but it would be advisable to get them on some next week

I have given mine a galley pot of flint grit on the run. I think there is calcium grit actually in the layers pellets, but if you are feeding them anything else other than layers pellets or mash (corn, treats etc.) you will need to give them additional grit to help them grind it up. Unless of course as already mentioned in previous post you are letting them freerange enough to find their own grit

You might get grit from a horse supplies shop, that was where I got mine. See if you have one nearby :D
