Rat poison

Recommended Posts

We now have a rat (or more like a family!). I have noticed a tunnel going into the run probably because I'm lazy and don't bring the food in every night. Ok so I've slapped my own wrist and know what I need to do but really I'd like to know what poisons people have used with success. Initially I was going to buy eradibait but I've read it isn't overly effective. I've heard Tomcat is good but have no idea how much to buy. Does anyone know or can recommend another decent brand?

When using rat poison make sure there are no pellets for the rats to get at. In other words if your hens are messy eater but a tray underneath their feeder and then take both the feed and the tray in overnight. I say this as I learnt that layers pellets have the antidote to rat poison in them.

I think I'll take the food away at about 5pm and then for the last couple of hours they'll just have to scratch for any leftovers. I'm off to try and get some bait tomorrow. I'm going away next week so I'll have to leave the food out then so ideally I'd like them gone by then. I can trust my lads to collect eggs once a day but it would be lunch time before they dragged themselves out of bed to put the food out and open the cube door.

I used tomcat 2, it comes in 'bricks', easier than pellets. When we had rats in the compost heap, I put 3 bricks of poison in a cardboard box into the compost bin, lid on top so nothing else could reach it. It was easy to see how much poison the rat was taking - all three bricks disappeareed in a matter of days, haven't seen ratty since.
