Imo
Silly question, but I'm always pretty careful with best before dates Anyway, supposedly this loaf of bread I'm munching on went out of date 3 days ago.... but it isn't in the least bit stale, no sign of mould or anything!! So I'm risking it anyway Is there any reason for such a short best before date for bread? I know it's nicer fresh, but I was just curious
Guest
'Best before' dates and 'use by' dates are two entirly different things - 'best before' is a guide for when to eat the product at it's best, 'use by' is what it says - use it by the date in question, or it may be unsuitable for humab consumption. You're correct - bread has a short 'best before' date as it's best enjoyed at it's freshest.
Imo
Gotcha My mum usually bakes bread for us which is extra yummy!
AmandaR
I find that a lot. From what I understand best before dates indicate that the product is just that...at it's best, before that date. Whereas Use By dates are used on more perishable food stuffs and generally, it's deemed not a good idea to eat them after the date has expired. Saying that though, I have to admit to usually using my eyes and nose to judge whether it is still edible in both cases. I think that the manufacturers are a tad over cautious with their dates to prevent people complaining of food going off before the dates have expired. Imo
Me too Certainly nothing wrong with the bread I have - I dread to think how much food is thrown out because it's 'out of date' even though it's probably fine.
Keanie Bean
I dont bother with sell by dates at all. If it's not got green on it and smells OK then I'll use it. It has to keep still too Sarah.x

Google freegans. You'll find sites with info on about just how much food is wasted in this country. If I drove I would be tempted to become a freegan. Would have to do it without dhs knowledge though so not possible as he is my chauffeur
